We need to think about leaving our planet and developing those technologies now so that the people of the future can utilize them, people always say "We will have all of that figured out in a thousand years" No, no we won't. We also seem to be to attached to our planet, whenever someone mentions going to mars or permanently settling elsewhere there is always the person who says "We can't just abandon our planet" Our planet is unique in our solar system no doubt, but no matter how much money we pour into protecting it, it won't last, it has a billion years or so until it can no longer support life, it's oceans will boil away, it's atmosphere will be stripped away, and we can't prevent that. We don't like to admit it but we Humans are weak, we care about what effects us on a personal level, we let emotions get in the way of our safety as a species, we don't think ahead, we don't care what the next generation will be like, we care what our lives will be like, just look at global warming and the mass amounts of anti-space travel people.
